Day 6 The Internet: Surfing Safety

I really liked the article "The Safe Passage" I think this is a good resource for parents and teachers. It was very informative with links to understand how the Internet works and what a web page is. I also noticed that the article links to a web page that teaches how to search the the Internet. This is a very good article and I will add it to my sites for parents and teachers.

As a primary school teacher, it is important for you to practice good netiquette with your students. I feel the earlier we start the better. By the time they reach me in high school, I would hope they would have developed some good practices. I find many of my students were not educated on how to search effectively, how to cite their sources, and how not to plagerize. We may feel we don't have the time to do this, considering we have to make sure we fit all our standards in, but it is important to keep in mind.

I agree with Lydia about teaching our students about citation and netiquette as soon as they start using the Internet. We taught our kids while they were young how to look both ways before crossing the street; we didn't wait until they were older. We should have the same philosophy about Internet safety.

I also agree that we as teachers need to take the time to teach our students proper etiquette when it comes to exploring the web or writing a research paper. Students must learn to be confident enough in their own work and abilities to succeed in the classroom and in life.
